Pirate of the Caribbean:On Stranger Tides (Review)

Hey everyone!

A week or so ago, I went with some friends to see the latest movie in the Pirates series. This movie leaves right where Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, left off. Captain Barbossa and Jack Sparrow are searching for fountain of youth, but they are not the only ones. This movie introduces the legendary Blackbeard and his daughter.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Pros:

Johnny Depp, seriously the man can do no wrong!

The introduction of Blackbeard...so cool!

The legend of the fountain of youth

The creepy but different take on mermaids

Getting to see Barbossa again

New celeb crush, Sam Claflin!

The quick wit and banter (which is now expected with these movies)

Cons:

The legend of the fountain of youth...I was expecting more and am a big nerd when it comes to explorers and stuff of that nature

Penelope Cruz...ummmm no! I hated how they kept shoving her and Jack Sparrow together and constantly talking about their past. Jack Sparrow should fly solo (or with me) ;)

Syrena and Philip, I just couldn't care less about their storyline...felt like filler material to me.

The movie was uber slow in parts and felt like it really didn't have to be drawn out so long.

The ending was perfect...they could have left it to our imaginations.

BUT no...that would make people think and we wouldn't want that. So we stick a stupid scene at the end of the credits. (Letting us know that there will be another movie and ensuring Penelope Cruz more screen time...ugh!)

*** I'm not sure what I will do if they make another movie. I have even more admiration for Johnny Depp, is that possible?! He said that he wanted to hold off on production of the fifth film because he wanted to keep the movies special. He said that they are special to the audience and also special to him. ***

So what are your thoughts?

  1. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But you probably already knew that.

I love Penelope Cruz! I think she's a marvelous actress and gorgeous, but not in a slutty way, which is very refreshing. I liked learning about Jack's actual past (which we know little to nothing about)

I do feel like they were trying to shove as many subplots into the movie as possible. They were trying to replace Will and Elizabeth's love story with what's his face and Syrena and that pretty much flopped. They should have either spent more time on it OR spent less to no time on it, instead of this halfway thing that they did. I think I have to disagree with you on the slow part, though. It felt like almost non-stop action to me. Like every other few minutes was a fight.

Looking back on the movie, I feel like it was halfway done. The details, the score, the acting, the sets, etc, were perfect. The plot, the storyline, the script, not so much. It definitely did a nose dive as compared to the first few.

And I am definitely looking forward to the fifth movie!

  2. For the record, I don't hate Penelope Cruz (I know it may appear that way in my post.) She is actually an actress I'm pretty indifferent about. I'm also great with learning more about Jack's past. I would have just preferred it presented in a different and more creative way.

Syrena and Philip's story was nothing in comparison to Will and Elizabeth's. I agree, they failed there.

The script could have been so much better! I hope they take more time with the next film. I already have train wreck feelings about it.

Not because I care to see it but because at least I could get in on the conversation. They won't shut up about it!
