Voices

Hey guys,

I find that often in life, a recurring theme or topic will find it's way into our company and hang around. I think this happens for a reason. (Currently, it's inner dialogue or my inner voice.)

For those who don't know me, I have struggled much of my life with negative self talk. It's not something I'm proud of and it's very hard to share with others, but I hope that my writing this post could help others who are dealing with the same struggle.

I found a great quote today, during my devotional reading that really helped to illustrate negative speech.

" Once we allow words of suspicion and doubt to be sown in our minds, they grow into life-sucking weeds. That's why it's important not only to make an effort to disbelieve them, and then ruthlessly pluck them out of our minds. Otherwise they will continue to erode our trust and influence our actions. Beware of dragon talk, whether it's whispered in your ear or whispered in your mind." --- Chapter 47 The Effect of Dragon-Talk A Hobbit Devotional by Ed Strauss

Dragon-Talk is the gossip we hear and pass along and it's the internal negative monologue we create and press play and repeat. This passage surprised me because I really did not realize what an effect Dragon-Talk can have on a person's life. When you listen to this self-talk you become paranoid, you develop a negative self esteem, it can cause depression, it can hurt your relationships, and much more.

This devotion helped open my eyes to the dangers of giving into Dragon-Talk. It helped remind me of how susceptible we are to negative influences in our lives and how we need to guard ourselves from such things. I hope to make a better effort of guarding my heart and my mind.

What do you think of Dragon-Talk? How do you guard yourself from negativity? From yourself? From others?

Sound off below.

  1. So glad you were able to find the courage to help yourself out. I am one of those naturally positive people so it is a bit hard for me to relate. My husband though gives into this so much and it depresses me as I usually try to avoid negative people all together in my life. I definitely agree that it can depress people and effect relationships. I imagine it is a hard habit to break from though.

  2. Good post, Anna. It wasn't until I managed to think differently about weight that I lost it! Getting on the scales and hating myself every morning for years was just perpetuating the problem!
